After the end of the Second World War, the Czech lands experienced the largest migration movements and population shifts in their history. At least five million people were affected. The expulsion and forced resettlement of the German population and the new settlement of the border areas by Czechs and Slovaks changed the ethnic, cultural and socio-economic structure of this region comprehensively and permanently. The book focuses on the course and consequences of the resettlement of the border areas. It asks about the reasons for migration and about the demographic, political, social and cultural effects of the migration and settlement process. The result is a comprehensive and critical overall view of population shifts in the borderlands, the like of which has not been presented before, even in Czech and Czechoslovak scholarship.
